The 25 Best Polo Shirts for Men to Wear Everywhere

A polo shirt has been a staple in the menswear universe for well, ever. Seriously—we’re talking since it first appeared during polo matches in the mid-1800s and reinvented by both John E. Brooks, a Brooks Brother legacy, in 1896 and Jean René Lacoste (yes, that one) in 1933, who reimagined the pique cotton short-sleeve style as we know it today for tennis matches.

But the life of the polo has been quite dubious over the past few decades when you think about bad ‘70s iterations or the boxy cuts made famous by your dad’s golfing crew. Regardless of past notions, there’s nothing frumpy of the latest batch hitting now.

How to Properly Wash a Polo Shirt

Maximizing the lifespan of your polo is going to come down to how you wash it. Make sure you’re using a gentle detergent, then set your wash to cold water. If you’re washing a white polo, make sure to toss it in with other whites to avoid any chance of bleeding.

To avoid any stitching coming undone or your collar getting all chewed up, we have a method for you. All you have to do is fold your polo inside out and make sure to extend the collar so it lays out flat (doing so will make sure the collar doesn’t roll up into itself all weird).

Also, do not use a fabric softener on your polos, as it can damage the polo’s weave or knit. And when it comes to drying, skip the machine and place your polos on a hanger to air dry!

How We Selected

For the past 18 months, we consulted with Men’s Health‘s editors and writers on the best polos for men. Experts, including our Deputy Editor of Commerce Christian Gollayan, and our Gear and Commerce Editor John Thompson, put a number of polos to the test and evaluated their style, fit, price point, and durability. We also considered top-reviewed polos with high praise on e-commerce websites we trust.
