The 7 Best Portable Dishwashers of 2022

NO ONE enjoys doing dishes. Unless you’re a masochist, spending 20 minutes or more rummaging around a sink full of dirty food-water every night after dinner is hardly fun. Thankfully, modern kitchen technology—automatic dishwashers, in particular—has saved most of us from the hassle of daily dishwashing. But, for anyone with limited kitchen space or inadequate plumbing, or city dwellers who can’t add major appliances to their apartment, standard dishwashers are rarely an option.

That’s where a good portable dishwasher comes in. Available in various capacities—from ultra-compact models that fit in an RV to rolling, counter-height options with many of the same features as traditional dishwashers—they’re a dream come true for anyone who seriously hates washing dishes. Ready to treat yourself and say goodbye to hand-washing dishes for good? We took a deep dive into many of the top, best-reviewed models to round up the best portable dishwashers to shop in 2022

What to Look for in a Portable Dishwasher

Portable dishwashers offer many of the same features as their traditional, full-sized counterparts, but in a smaller—sometimes much smaller—footprint. That can make deciding on the right one difficult. You’ll want to consider everything from the overall size of the unit and its capacity to how loud and how much it is. More specifically:

Size

For most people shopping for a portable dishwasher, size is the most important concern. How much kitchen space you have available will dictate how large of a unit you can buy. For anyone extremely short on space (like, say RVers), an ultra-compact model might be the only option. Apartment dwellers might want to look for compact models, or they may have the real estate to accommodate a floor-standing alternative that rolls neatly out of the way among their other kitchen appliances. If space isn’t an issue, you can also consider a large model (24 inches wide) to give you the maximum capacity for washing all kinds of dishes, from silverware and dinnerware to pots and pans.

Remember, too, that most countertop models are reasonably portable (30-50 pounds). But the heaviest models are designed to be semi-permanent and “live” on your countertop.

Noise

As a general rule, portable dishwashers are louder than permanently installed models. The noise level of dishwashers, including portable dishwashers, is typically measured in dBA. The higher the number, the louder the machine.

Most models above fall into the 50-55 dBA range, which is approximately as loud as light traffic and an electric toothbrush, respectively. The quietest models, like the RCA 24-inch countertop dishwasher we recommended above, are almost completely silent. Note that anything above 60 dBA will typically mean you’ll want to be in another room while it’s running.

Features

Many portable dishwashers have fewer features than traditional models. For example, you might be limited to just two or three wash cycle types (e.g., Normal, Intensive, Soak, etc.). Some include additional features, however, like an Eco-Mode to conserve water, a bladed food disposer that pulverizes large food particles, or a delay start function that allows you to delay the wash cycle by up to a full day.

Comparing the features, capacities, prices, and sizes of portable dishwashers can make shopping for the right model for you difficult. To help you make an informed decision, we researched several dozen of the best-reviewed and best-selling models on the market. The list above represents our honest picks of the seven best portable dishwashers to shop this year.
